Strengthening Health systems capacity in Africa for Pandemic Equity and Responsiveness (SHARPER)

SHARPER aims to examine relevant legal, scientific, regulatory, ethical, and advocacy mechanisms related to research through case studies; identify opportunities to advance post-trial access for populations; develop innovative tools, courses, and materials; and produce a range of peer-reviewed academic outputs. SHARPER also aims to effect strategic communication to engage communities, regulatory bodies, ethics committees, and regional and international governing bodies on ways of improving access to research benefits to African populations.


About the Consortium Lead

Professor Ademola Ajuwon is a faculty member of the Department of Health Promotion and Education, College of Medicine, University of Ibadan, Nigeria. He has supervised 120 Master of Public Health dissertations and 7 PhD theses. He was a Visiting Scholar at the Center for AIDS Prevention Studies, University of California, San Francisco, USA; a post-doctoral research fellow at the Bloomberg School of Public Health, Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, USA; DAAD Staff Exchange Fellow at the University of Kwa-Zulu Natal, Durban South Africa; CARTA Senior Staff Exchange Fellow, University of Malawi, and Visiting Professor at the School of Public Health, University of Witwatersrand, South Africa.

He has received research grants from the World Health Organization, Fogarty International Center, Office of the Global AIDS Control, British Council, the United Nations Funds for Women, and the Swiss National Science Foundation. He has authored over 100 scientific publications, including papers in the Bulletin of the World Health Organization, Biomed Central Public Health, PLoS, Reproductive Health Matters, and the African Journal of Reproductive Health.
